Apple iPhone, Palm Centro and Sprint Speed

Comments

Chadman,
OMG, how do we make a choice in a situation like this? Honestly,I donot know. When I saw a friend with an iPhone and he showed me how it works-Wow,I said. That is it!I must have one.But looking at my Treo680 working fine,I just can't throw it away.I still love PalmOS PDA for its simplicity. For the moment,I with hold my decision.

Another friend suggested that I keep my Treo680(since I like it so much) and buy iPod Touch. What do you think?

Thanks for the perspective! I have been procrastinating for months about choosing a smartphone. The iPhone sure is slick, but do I need to spend the money when the Centro does so much, even if it doesn't look as cool? The fact is, I don't use my mobile phone all that much, and the Palm OS has been pretty good to me over the years. Hmm.

That would be an excellent compromise!
This is an amazing deal for what you are getting for $99. You are getting a 755p in a smaller case, smaller battery (but I have not had any issues yet) and less memory (64 vs 128MB).
Stick w/ the Centro! ;) lol Ok so I'm biased, that's what I'm planning to get once my contract is up (w/ Sprint & I'm sticking w/ them!) in May.
Wow. I was really expecting a lot of hate for Sprint and people thinking I was crazy for wanting a Palm over an iPhone!
I think Spring is the way to go. Verizon uses the same 3g network that Sprint uses (without the TV features that you mention) and I love the speed. In fact, this is why I love the EVDO Network cards for traveling with my laptop. I'd stick with the Treo.

Regarding the Iphone, yes the SDK is looming but I think this is an area where Apple really has dropped the ball. Why wasn't this in the works at MacWorld when so many reviewers were asking about? Either Apple was oblivious or just plain ignorant. Take your pick. Wired magazine wrote an article about how the Iphone was released well ahead of it's "scheduled" time and that lots of people are just paying beta testers. I think it fairly well fits thus far. (I mean seriously Steve...no copy and paste by now???!!!!) But the Iphone is reaching near maturity with each update and soon they will get it right. The SDK will help but it will be a little while before developers take full advantage of it. I think in all actuality consumers will see the near fully matured Iphone with the next release. Steve loves to give consumers just a tiny taste, make them buy, and then repeat. I can just see it now and next years MacWorld.

Steve enters stage:

"We're here to talk about an amazing phone and some new features. Ladies and Gentleman I present copy and paste. Now you can transfer words with the push of a button."

Audience looks at Steve like he needs to be checked into the nearest mental rehab facility.
I too was a loyal Palm III/V/Treo owner for years. But I have tasted the Kool-Aid and it is good. ;-) There's no doubt the iPhone has issues, but it's the cat's pajamas for me. And to NOT have another device for music, movies, etc. is huge for me. Don't get me wrong, I have an iPod as well...er, the wife does now, I should say. I do miss 3G, having played with a Blackjack breifly before the iPhone but it'll come soon enough. I'd rather have Edge and WiFi than 3G personally.

For example, a couple of weeks back I was on my way back home from a business trip. I caught up on voicemail, checked my email, then text'd my wife I was getting on the plane and the cranked some Sabbath. Once comfy I switched to watching The Simpsons Movie all on one purty device. With my MacBook stored not so safely in an overhead compartment. Of course, you can do that with the Centro - but definitely not with the ease of an iPhone. It's not just the iPhone that's hooked me, it's iTunes as well.

To each his own, but I fear I'm slowly becoming an Apple Fan Boy. OMG?!
LOL! I appreciate your input Chris. I just may stick with the Centro...
Apple fanboy-ism is great! I am too, problem is that I am a Palm-fanboy too! Such an internal conflict I have!
[this is good]
The unlocked GSM Centro goes on sale here (UK) in just a couple of days and I have to say I'm tempted. I'm a Treo 680 owner - also an unlocked model - and love it.

So what exactly will I gain by jumping from 680 to Centro?

(And yes, readers of my blog will know I tried out a Treo 500v last week... it's going straight back on eBay! Palm OS all the way for me)
Hmm.. what you will gain. Well, the smaller form factor really does it for me. I can't imagine going back to a 680, 755, etc. The OS seems very, very stable. it has only reset on me once, and that was with some Sprint specific software. The regular OS with a multitude of apps works fine.

Really, it is just a shrunken 680. The main differences are: 1100mAh battery (to be honest, it appears I get the same battery life as I did with the 1200mAh battery on the 680), Same memory- 64MB, built in IM application and I can't think of anything else. It is all about the form factor- same Palm OS you love, in a smaller package.
Thanks so much for responding... I think I'll need to get my hands on one in-store and have a play with it.

For me the PIM and SMS functionality is worth the price of the 680 alone. More and more I'm relying on it to pick up my personal emails while out and about. It's just so reliable. So I don't want to change for the sake of change.

But if I can get all of this wrapped in a smaller case...?

Watch this space :-)
I am probably one of the biggest Apple fanboys here, seeing how I work for them! lol. Seriously though there are a lot of features that ANY phone can do out there now that are not possible so far on the iPhone. Now while I can't just go and switch over to Sprint (everyone I know is on AT&T) I do want a more capable phone for the normal every day things. I have iPods coming out my ears and Macs a plenty around here, the iPhone just isn't doing it for me. I'm buying a Centro tomorrow from AT&T, and I love the color!
