Palm read the future, saw need for new leadership

I agree that things for Palm aren't as dour as was written. However, I do feel that the Palm OS has become somewhat antiquated - and I've loved and used Palm devices since the III (I've owned a III, V, Prism, Treo 600 and Treo 650). After I lost my beloved Treo last month I made the decision to buy an iPhone when they came out. It's not that the iPhone could do more or even as much as a Treo, it's that the iPhone can do most of what I want beautifully. For the 20 or so days in between I tried out a Blackjack simply to try something new. While I didn't like the OS and the battery life was horrendous, it was faster than my Treo 650, had 3G, could multitask and is very, very thin. My hope is that Palm releases something this year that, may not be as purty as an iPhone, but uses a new version of PalmOS and takes the market by storm. Again. My .02.
Negative... Palm OS Linux for Treo's are not coming out till 208- Per Ed Colligan at the recent 4th quarter earnings report. Sorry :)

PS: I know peeps how know peeps. If what they tell me is true, it will be SOOOOO worth waiting for...
I hope you're right, but I fear that equals a lot of lost sales.
Do users care about the OS? To a certain extent - but I think that has to do with usability, not what is behind the scenes. My concern with Palm is that there is no creativity, no thinking outside the box, like they have done in the past. Here is a company that put great and innovative products together for years, and then just seemed to stall, IMO. We're getting more Treos, but we're not getting better apps, better UI, more features on the device - such as a better camera, wifi, etc. It's repurposed Treo tech, put in a slight hardware change. When they started shipping Treos with Windows Mobile, they became just another hardware device manufacturer. And look at what has happened from the other companies since the Treo 700w was released. All kinds of new devices on the market and many of them with better features.

Palm was in such a great position to make a cool, easy to use, device that had some coolness to it, like the iPhone. But there is nothing happening with the Palm OS at this point, and little happening with the hardware. It's tough to watch this happen to such a great company.

The Foleo is sort of an example of thinking outside the box, but I think they just missed it. I know you like that device, but it's not cool looking. It's clunky to use. And there is little software that will run on it. Not to mention that Email doesn't work on it without it being paired with a Treo (only a newer Treo, too). Another opportunity to break the mold and create a neat device, and I think they missed it.
Gosh, I sure seem to rag on Palm these days. Hope none of my Palm buddies think I'm being too harsh. I pick because I care. :-) I'd love to see a turnaround!
The thing is, recently they've been hiring all these people, Marc from Chatter and the iPod designer guy, but it's gonna take some time until these moves pay off. I do think there's something amazing coming down the road. The negativity in the meantime is really getting annoying. I know a year is forever in IT, but it might be worth it.

And I can't wait to get a Foleo! I probably won't be buying it till September sometime, unless I just can't wait. :-)
