Yes, it is one of those stories again; one of those, "I have been using a Palm for..." tid-bits. However, the Palm device has truly made an impact in my life. My first Palm was the Palm III, yeah, I missed the boat on the original pilots, but I was a close second. By today's standards, these devices of yesteryear seem rudimentary, with the current generation being so powerful and elegant. When I started using Palms I used them for nothing more than the basic PIMs. It was convenient to have the Date Book, Address Book, To-Do's and Memo Pad to record and review my daily activities. Then I saw a Palm V a professor of mine in college had.
It was beautiful, I remember gazing at the device every second he had it out, one time he even let me hold it. That was a big deal for me because at the time, the device cost around $400 and that was well, well beyond my price range and I thought I would never be able to afford such a device.
Since those days I have owned (in no specific order, just what comes to mind) an m500, m100, m105, m130, m505, a couple Clie's (not my favorite, though I do respect what they had done pushing the platform forward. Sony did some great innovation), TC, T3, T5, LifeDrive, Treo 600 and now my current device the Palm TX. Needless to say, I love Palm's.
I could ramble more, but instead I will list the top 10 applications that have an affect on my life and give a brief example:
1. Palm Wireless Keyboard
This device is a must for meetings. It has revolutionized the way I use my laptop for productivity. It is probably a 50/50 split between PowerBook and Palm.
2. Notes are the best "on-the-fly" tool ever conceived
Not only do I have direct input on the touch screen and I can create quick notes, but also I can brainstorm diagrams and show this drawings to others.
3. eBooks
I have also discovered that I some-what enjoy reading! Yes, eBooks are great. My wife, however disagrees and says that they will never replace her printed books.
4. PIM's
Now, I never have to remember phone numbers or important dates (well, unimportant dates for that matter).
5. Music/Video player/Picture viewer
With an SD card, who needs an iPod? Well, I do, but a normal person doesn't really need it. I don't carry photos of my family in my wallet anymore. I carry digital photos and home movies- all on my Palm ready to proudly display at any time!
6. Email
Checking email is great on the go. I can quickly look at messages from multiple accounts and compose when I have idol time.
7. Web
This is great. I would have never thought in a million years when I had a Palm III that I would be able to view web pages in real time.
8. Documents to Go
This application has single-handedly revolutionized the PDA in my opinion The ability to take Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF documents with you... anywhere? Who would have thunk it!
9. Thousands upon thousands of applications are available
If you want your Palm PDA to do something that it does not do out of the box, just browse the web to any of several software stores and download a trial. That is right, most Palm software has a trial period of some sort, so "try" away till you find that perfect application
10. A devoted community
At the end of the day it is nice to know that I am not alone out there in my fanaticism. I read Palm Addicts every day to get the latest news, information and tips about Palm devices. I even get information on other devices occasionally such as the iPod. The user community is strong and it is great to know that other embrace this technology for all that it does to change, enhance and enrich our lives.
