For months I have secretly had issues with the iPhone. Many moons ago, I had a post discussing how a Palm Treo and do so much more than an iPhone. Every since then, in the back of my mind, I somehow still thought I was using a Treo.
I know you are asking yourself, "Why would Chadman do this?". Well, this purchases was driven by anger. As everyone knows I am a HUGE Palm, Inc. fan. A couple of weeks ago, Ed Colligan announced that Palm was canceling the Foleo. This literally pushed me over the edge. I was so looking forward to this device and was an enormous proponent for its success. I felt like Palm screwed me and I needed to get even; but how?
The iPhone.
Yup. I thought about it for a couple of hours and went to my local AT&T store (the Apple Store is about 30 minutes away) and bought one the day before Apple announced the price drop.Needless to say I got my money back, so there is no bitterness.
I have to admit, I gave up a lot of functionality on the Treo 680 I owned to get the iPhone. I won't bore you with a list, but it is long. The point is, after using the iPhone for a couple of weeks, I am finding that I don't miss "all of the functionality" I had with the Treo; I just either don't need or can't use the functions the Treo provided and somehow, miraculously, I am surviving and enjoying it.
The iPhone is a gorgeous piece of hardware, there is no denying it. Many have said that it is the device Palm should have made if they had their act together; I tend to agree with that statement. However, I am a huge Apple fan owning a Mac at home and using them on and off through the years as work. The iPhone complements Apple's ease of use very well.
However.
The iPhoen is far, far, far from perfect and I have every hope for a very, very long list of improvements (ranging from functionality that already exists on most free phones to adding Spotlight to find emails and calendar appointments). Even though the device is not my ideal picture of perfection from a functionality stand point, the darn thing is just so fun to use, beautiful to look at, great care was taken into how the phone actually works (it is really good from the multitasking green bar you receive when accessing other applications to return to you call in progress or if more than one contact has the same number, when that call comes in it says, "Call from X or Y". I think this is a really nice touch that no other phone does to my knowledge), and the web is absolutely amazing, one cannot help but love the iPhone even with its shortcomings.
I have every bit of faith that Apple will pull through with enhancements (likely as part of Leopards release) and look forward to using the iPhone for months to come.
Mobility today has a post saying that this is a leaked photo of the new Palm Centro aimed at the youth market to target Dash and Sidekick owners and will retail for $99 with contract. Not too bad! What do you think?
Palm needs to get this on the Treo in a prc without the Java environment ASAP!

If you own a Treo, this is one application worth getting! It has a 14-day trial and it is plenty of time to check it out. It allows you to dial anyones number or launch any application with your voice! For example I say, "Send Message to Jennifer Garrett" and the Treo says, "What number?". I reply with, "Mobile". It is that easy. Remember, t si not just for phone calls but emails, messaging and launching applications! Is there a downside? Well, the application does not work with a Bluetooth headset- the voice commands have to be entered without the headset. Oh, did I mention it is only $19.99?
This is a great photo I found on Flickr. I like Palm's advertising! These ads are located in New York and San Francisco. I wish they would expand the market.
I have a series of three all-day meetings this week Tuesday through Thursday. These meetings are held at an off-site location due to the shear volume of people participating. I received the agenda and other documentation for the meetings a couple of days ahead of time. Since I like to be prepared, I copied the info to my 2GB SD card on my Treo 680. Tuesday came and I booted up my laptop to take some notes a couple of minutes before the meeting was to begin. I looked for the folder containing all of the documentation, but low and behold, I could not find it! Not an issue, I proceeded to connect to the wireless that is provided for us,. connect to the VPN and get the mail from my network drive.
